Good news this week

Hello, fellow Illians!

ILL has received over 240 requests from you as of Thursday, October 25.

The good news is that the ILL staff has been able to keep up with your orders this week.

Many thanks to those of you who have added OCLC numbers(ascension numbers), ISBNs and ISSNs to your requests. It is helping us to keep up and get those orders done in a timely manner.

A special thanks to our customers who have begun ordering books on I-Share.

All your efforts are helping the ILL staff complete orders for your information needs in a expedient fashion!

Unforturnate turn of your requests

ILL is sad to report we have not been able to keep up with your requests. ILL is running a day behind in ordering materials.

What can you do to help?

1. Order your materials on I-Share when possible (Videos,DVDs, CDs should be submitted to the ILL department using our online forms or WorldCat).

What slows the ILL staff down is ordering materials you can order yourself on I-Share. See instructions here. Animated video on ordering via I-Share go here.

2. Place your electronic order via Worldcat when you find a citation. You would be amazed at how fast the ILL staff can order requests submitted from WorldCat. The ILL staff does not have to retype the information of needed materials.

Select Worldcat from our database list.

3. Fill out your forms completely. Missing pages numbers, volume, issue numbers, and incomplete titles will slow down your request while the ILL staff tries to verify the citation. Don't forget to include your email and ID number.

4. Check and see if WIU owns the material. A third of all requests ILL has received are on the shelf upstairs. We check each one before we send it back to you.

5. Please do not resubmit requests. Contact us via email, phone, or in person for a status check.

Update on your requests

The ILL staff is happy to report we are keeping up with your requests.
Most materials are ordered by the end of the working day. Please allow extra processing time for materials submited over the weekend.

A reminders:

Contact ILL via phone or email when materials have not been received within two weeks. Please do not reorder those materials.

298-2761 Interlibrary-Loan@wiu.edu

All pickups are at the Main Circulation Desk. You may return materials at ILL or Circulation.

Status on orders

ILL received over 55 requests today. We are behind in requesting these materials.
We will keep you posted as the ILL staff processes requests.

You may help decrease backlog by ordering I-SHARE materials yourself - go to the instructions here.

Videos, DVDs, and CDs should not be requested via I-SHARE - most ISHARE libraries will not lend them.

No More Paper Request Forms

Interlibrary Loan will no longer be accepting paper request forms. All requests should now be submitted electronically. You may use our online request forms, or you may submit your requests through I-Share or World Cat. If you need assistance using our electronic request options, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 298-2761. We are open M-F, 8:00 AM through 4:30 PM.

This change is in preparation for the launch of Illiad, which will require all requests be submitted electronically. We expect Illiad to be launched later this summer. Training will be available once the program is launched. In the meantime, you may preview Illiad here.

Of course, paper forms will be available in the event our computer system is down.

WESTCAT new features

Two new features recently made available by CARLI have been enabled within the WestCat Library Catalog: http://www.wiu.edu/library/westcat/

1) The "New in the Catalog" button (top menu) enables users to search/browse for recent additions to WIU library collections. The interface has been locally customized so that search limits can be narrowed to major WIU formats/locations (e.g., Books in Malpass, Videos/DVDS in Malpass, Music Library). Users can place a variety of chronological limits on a search (e.g., yesterday, 1 week ago, 2 weeks ago, last month, 3 months ago) and/or may search for a specific Title or Author.

2) Users who click a Periodical title link within WestCat will automatically engage a query of WIU's instance of the SFX KnowledgeBase. A "Seeking Full Text" button on the Results page will momentarily "pulse" as the database query unfolds. An ISSN "match" will result in the display of the WIU Libraries "Find It!" button. Clicking this button opens the traditional WIU/SFX Menu listing access options.

For example, run a search for "Journal of Modern History" (Limit: "Journal/Magazine Title"). The resulting display notes complete JSTOR e-availability from 1929-2001, with InfoTrac/AcadSearch FT e-access through ~2005. The "Find It!" button will not appear within WestCat upon a "failed" SFX query (no ISSN match).

Malpass Mocha, new look, Harry Potter & other news

Summer school is almost here. However, we have heard some of you have started classes already. Good luck this summer.

Due to plumbing problems the Malpass Mocha will be closed this summer.

The library and some of the branches have received new furniture. In the main library near Malpass Mocha there is a fireplace, an area rug, and two new sofas.

There will be a Harry Potter Community event coming soon to celebrate the new movie and the last book in the series.

The air conditioning is still off in the library but should be back online soon.

Your requests are coming in sturdily and have been ordered promptly.

Do as ILL says not as ILL emails

Some of you have noticed our email discrepancies.

Your emails say to pickup at circulation and/or interlibrary loan. Confusing message - we know.

Just to let you know all materials are at the Main Circulation Desk in spite of
what the automatic emails say that come from the roth@... email address.

Explanation:

This is a pickup location error. The techies tried to remove interlibrary loan from the pick-up
locations. This action created errors when other libraries tried to process WIU I-Share requests. We had to leave ILL in the pickup box so your requests could move forward with out incident. The bad news is that the emails still have ILL as a pickup, but your materials are at the circulation desk.

Translation: The removal of Interlibrary loan pickup location created a vast disturbance in the Illinois library community amoung other interlibrary loan departments when they could not process WIU customer requests. This could have cause many more problems when you did not receive your material. It was easier to let the emails be slightly incorrect so ILLians could receive requested materials without to much hubbub.

What's up with that email?

As you know by now you pickup your materials at the Circulation desk. So why does the email still say pickup at Interlibrary Loan?

ILL has been a pickup location for many years. Apparently, it more difficult to remove us from being a pickup location than it is to move pickup. Because Interlibrary Loan is a pickup location- our name appears on your email.

In the I-Share software interlibrary loan is embedded as a pickup location and it is not a simple task to remove ILL as a pickup location in this software.

It was thought within a week the problem would be remedied; however, it is taking much longer than expected to fix this problem. Someday soon the emails will reflect pickup is at the main circ desk and ILL will no longer appear as a pickup location.

An ILL Story

I just wanted to share this article about a customer's appreciation of ILL Services. I believe the WIU ILL Unit is hearing our customers' concerns and working hard to obtain every request submitted to us. There has been a few bumps in the road, but the ILL Service is new and improved!

I hope you ILLians are finding our service much improved.

Hello from the ILL Corner!

Your ILL staff is very busy as this is our busiest time of year. Your requests are being processed within two days.

We have added a new feature to the blog called 'Fun & Games'. The game will take a little extra time to load on your screen. It is called 'Flood it'. The object is to make the square one solid color within 25 moves.

Give it a try...let us know what you think of this new feature.

What is your ILL staff doing?

Hi there ILLians. Hope your holidays have been safe and happy ones.

On February 6, 2007 the ILL staff completed the first faze of training for ILLiad.

We are busy ordering your requests and learning the lending side of ILLiad. It has been exciting and frustrating week for us.

This new software is changing the way we process materials to other libraries and is the begining of better service for our all customers.

Coming this summer is the borrowing side of ILLiad. This is the side you will see and I hope you are starting to get excited about this software. ILLiad will role in a new era of allowing YOU the ability to see the status for YOUR WorldCat requests.

Best wishes for the semester,
ILL Staff

ILL Pickup is at the Circulation Desk

Just a reminder...

Your e-mails may say pickup is at the Interlibrary Loan desk. We are having technically difficulties which is taking much longer to fix than we planned.

Pick-up is at the CIRCULATION desk for all items on loan. This is to allow you access to your borrowed items whenever the library is open.

ILL still takes returns, checks on the status for your requests, submits your renewals, and assists you with all your ILL questions.

Phone: 298-2761

ILL Books are Moving!

Beginning Wednesday, January 10, 2007, ILL books can be picked up at the main circulation desk located on the 2nd floor of Malpass Library. Books will be available for pickup any time the library is open. Books may also be returned to the main circulation desk (please do not return books in the drop box).

You may still stop by the ILL office with returns, any other questions, or concerns you have about our service. Beginning Tuesday, January 16, 2007, our hours will be 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

We hope this change will make ILL service more convenient for our patrons.
