ILLiad Feature Spotlight - Bookmarks
How important are those bookmarks anyway?
Bookmarks should be left in all materials you borrow. Bookmarks enable the ILL staff to process your renewals and returns promptly.
Items without bookmarks can delay renewals not requested electronically. Returned materials may be delayed and not be discharged from your account properly.

ILLiad Feature Spotlight - Renewals
Would you like to renew a book that you received through ILLiad? It's easy to request a renewal online at any time.
1. Log in to your ILLiad Account
2. From the left hand menu, select "Checked Out Items"
3. From the list in the center of the screen, select the item you wish to renew
4. Click "Renewal Request" in red type at the top of the screen.
This will notify Interlibrary Loan Staff that you would like to renew the item. We will contact the lending library to request the renewal. If the renewal is approved, we will update your account with the new due date. If the renewal is denied, we will send you an e-mail.
You may keep the item while we wait to hear about the renewal. It should take no more than one week to hear back from the lending library. If it has been longer than that, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 298-2761.
Some problems which might come up:
1. After pressing "Renewal Request", you receive a message like "You can only renew this item between the dates of 11/18/2008 and 11/30/2008"
ILLiad is designed to allow renewal requests only within a certain timeframe around the due date. Wait until the time frame specified and resubmit your renewal request.
2. You are unable to request a renewal.
ILLiad will not allow renewal requests once the item has gone overdue. However, Interlibrary Loan staff can still contact the lending library to request a renewal for you. Contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 298-2761 and let us know the item you wish to renew. If the renewal is approved, your account will be updated. If not, you will receive an e-mail.
Keep in mind that the decision to grant a renewal and the length of the renewal are entirely up to the lending library. WIU Interlibrary Loan staff cannot intervene in these decisions.
Any time you experience a difficulty with the renewal process, or if you have any other questions, please contact our office.

ILLiad updates- Tired of typing your requests?
Dear ILLians,
Your ILL staff is happy to report that some ILLiad bugs have been fixed.
If you use the tab key when filling out the request form - tabbing will now take you to the next box to fill out.
Tired of typing your requests? Relief at last!
The auto-fill has been turned on in WorldCat. The ILL icon is no longer operational with this function. The icon has been removed from WorldCat. Look for the link "Submit request to WIU ILL". The feature is wonderful - give it a try.

ILL Goes Back to the 80's FRIDAY 8/29 10am-3pm
ILL 1980's - Themed Open House
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1984 WIU students could play Donkey Kong in the basement of the recently constructed Malpass Library, the Go-Go's--Like totally for sure!-- wowed the campus with a fall concert, and color-coded forms had to be filled out if a person needed an item for a project and it wasn't in the library collection. Looking back fondly on good times had in the 80's and celebrating what the latest technology has brought to library services, the University Libraries Interlibrary Loan Office will be hosting a 1980's-themed open house on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Malpass Library. The event will feature door prizes donated by local businessperson Celene Cross of Spirit in the Sky and Kathy Keefer of The Phoenix as well as music, videos, and even candy with a 1980's theme and a great opportunity to learn about the many ways in which library patrons can use interlibrary loan services to gain access to books, films, and articles even when the WIU Libraries don't own the item in question.
Recently interlibrary loan at Western has moved to an all-digital format, known as ILLiad, which has made the process of borrowing materials from outside of the University faster and more efficient. Those who visit the open house can receive hands-on assistance with setting up an ILLiad account and gain access to millions of items from all over the world with just a few clicks of a button. "Many things have changed in libraries since the 1980's, especially in the realm of technology," notes WIU interlibrary loan coordinator Linda Wade, "but what hasn't changed is that we are still committed to helping people at our University to get the information they need. We hope people will drop by for a taste of the 1980's and of what we have to offer here in the University Libraries."
List of Door Prizes:
80's cd from Rock N Records owned by Cathy Jersey
Gift Certificate from Spirit in the Sky owned by Celene Cross
Gift Certificate from The Phoenix owned by Kathy Keefer
Led Zeppelin Poster Phoenix
Betty Boop wallet
80's Party in a bag
Golf Pen set
80's accessories

IMPORTant info about ILLiad Renewals
Please check out the ILLiad renewals guide from the ILL website.
ILLiad renewals are confusing to say the least. ILLiad only allows one renewal. The interlibrary loan staff has done a work around behind the scenes so that a second renewal can be requested.
I have contacted OCLC and they said changing this is not a priority by the software producers (ATLAS) of ILLiad. I nearly fell of my chair laughing when ATLAS said why. ATLAS reason, "It is so rare that anyone requests a renewal."
Of course, this statement should be added to Urban Legends.
OCLC has added WIU to the list of libraries requesting the ability to have a renewal feature available in ILLiad. I will send my comments for less confusing language as well. (See tutorial for details.)
If anyone has questions or problems renewing ILLiad materials, please contact interlibrary loan.
interlibrary-loan@wiu.edu or call us at 309-298-2761
SEE "Renewing ILLiad Items" under DETAILED GUIDES. http://www.wiu.edu/library/units/ill/ill_webrv.sphp?id=386

Did you ever wonder?
Did you ever wonder how you materials arrive at interlibrary loan? Well, if you have here are some photos to show you the process. This process is for all items borrowed from libraries in Illinois.
First, you order the item on I-Share. https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uc/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First
The library prints the request and searches for it from their selves. Once located, the item is then in route to WIU. The item is placed in a bag on the Illinois Library Delivery System (ILDS).
ILDS is a state delivery system that began in 1965 to deliver library materials through out the State of Illinois.
Here is a delivery truck pulling in to WIU.

Delivery is 5 days a week in the morning. Your materials are processed by 4:30pm and ready for pickup at the circulation desk on the day they arrive.
